Poem In Your Pocket Day, or PIYP, as some refer to it, is something anyone can participate in, and is really easy to get involved in. All a person had to do, is print or write down a poem, whether it's their own or one of their favorites, and keep in with them the whole day. They could even simply keep it on their phone if they can’t carry a hard copy. Then, people can go around sharing their poem with whomever they choose.
You don't have to memorize the poem, but just keeping it and reading it to people helps share the love and appreciation of poetry, which is what this day is really about. People are even sharing their poems online using the hashtag #pocketpoem. So many groups and communities all over America are joining in to appreciate poetry, doing little things to help spread the word about PIYP Day. They are passing out bookmarks with lines from poems on them, urging local shops to give people carrying poems discounts, and even posting pocket-sized versions of their poems in public places.
It’s never too late to join! There is never a bad time to read and write poetry, and you might as well have a great time doing so with thousands of others all across the United States! Spread the word about Poem in Your Pocket Day to whoever you can, and if you didn’t get to participate this year, you can always join in next year! Remember, poetry is more than just words… it is a way of expression, escape, and connection.
