The Earthquake in Nepal that you've probably heard about by now, occurred near the capital of Kathmandu and the city of Pokhara. Nearly 539 people died in this earthquake and more than 1,700 were injured. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the magnitude of the earthquake was 7.8, which is almost to the top of the scale. (See the image down below for a reference of a Magnitude Scale). Nepali Information Minister, Minendra Rijal stated, "There had been 'massive damage' at the epicenter, from where little
information is emerging." Also, the Dharahara tower (one of Nepal's landmarks) had completely collapsed onto people's houses.
The U.S. is sending in a disaster response team to Nepal and has released an initial 1 million dollars to serve the immediate needs of Nepal. This is quite a devastating loss that Nepal has experienced. Many Nepalese people reported to the NTV news press of Nepal that they hope this event should never happen anywhere else. -Supritaa M.S.
