Why do friends get jealous of relationships?

Dear PURPLE PEOPLE EATER,
This is a great question! There are a few different reasons a friend could potentially get jealous of a relationship. Whether it’s a boyfriend/girlfriend situation or just the fact that your friend is becoming better friends with this person than with you- being the “third wheel” hurts. I’ve had my fair share of experience with this kind of thing, so I’ll put it in perspective for you.
Picture your best friend in the world. You wouldn’t do anything without them and you know that you would trust each other with anything. Then suddenly, they start becoming friends with another person. You’re totally cool with it, because you know your friend would never do anything to hurt you or exclude you. Then, you notice that they’re spending a LOT of time with this other friend, that could possibly become their girlfriend or boyfriend. You still spend time with them, just not as much. They start talking about fun memories of inside jokes they made. It really, really hurts. You feel like you’ve been betrayed, replaced. You feel lost.
This is why some people get jealous. They may not want to hang out with their former friend, because they know that if they do, their new friend will be there. Why bother if you can’t get any alone time?
I hope this helped you understand why someone may get jealous of your relationship with someone else. Just be careful. Remember, make new friends and keep the old!
Best of luck,
Amy
