Tourists from all over the world come to see this one attraction; Old Faithful every single day. Some Geophysicists say that beneath this beauty is a ticking time bomb: a supervolcano. Geophysicists have been awed with this idea, and now, using the newest technology, they have discovered this extraordinary marvel of nature.
Scientists did know that this volcano existed, but just recently, they have realized the tremendous size of it. Underneath the national park's attractions and walking paths is enough hot rock to fill the Grand Canyon nearly 14 times over! The heat source for this volcano is 440-1800 miles below the Earth’s surface; some scientists speculate that the heat source is directly from the core. It alone has a volume 2.5 times that of the Grand Canyon and to put this into perspective, the volcano’s volume is about 13,625,000,000,000 (13 Trillion, 625 Billion) cubic yards!
The good news is that there are no new dangers; however, scientists are recording every minuscule movement. This is crucial if we don’t want to have another Pompeii incident, and it would be preferred if we could evacuate as many people as possible if such a catastrophe does occur. The Yellowstone is a great national park, and you shouldn't be afraid to go check it out yourself!
