“Thank you, oh thank you, men and women, brave and strong!” were words of gratitude sung by our chorus. In honor of the Veterans that came to our school on November 11th we held an assembly, accompanied by a lunch-in for our brave soldiers. Our assembly consisted of poems written by our peers, the school chorus singing, and the AWMS Band playing to show our thanks for their service.
Most of our school dressed in red, white, and blue for the special event. The program began with our Principal, Mr. Aulenbach, giving a speech, and then the AWMS school president, Sabrina Perez, led the Pledge of Allegiance. Next, our chorus sang “Star Spangled Banner” and “Thank You, Soldiers” in which the band joined in. The chorus also sang “God Bless the USA” with Mrs. Sabatino on the piano.
When the band played “Marches of the Armed Forces” the veterans stood up as their unit's song was being played. It was really interesting to see the different veterans standing up when their marches were on. The poems read by Emily Chen, Samantha Hulme, and Tyler Maines, were chosen by the NHS (The National Honor Society). These poems brought tears to the audience’s eyes and warmed their hearts. After that, students who invited their Veterans come and enjoy the performance were able to sit down and share a lunch with them. All in all, the performance was a great way to honor all of our Veterans, not just the ones who came, and show our gratitude for what they do to keep America safe. -By Raquel S; Edited by Jeyda B
