We’ve all heard the saying: Humans only use 10% of their brain. However do we know that this is true? Well, it is not. We might only understand 10% or less of how the brain functions, but we for sure know that we use all of our brain. The only regions that we don’t use are the ones that have suffered from serious injuries or disease. Researchers say that this myth had started in 1908, in a famous book written by the psychologist, William James, which was called The Energies of Men. You can check out the book yourself!
The proof for this exists in an article written by Daven Hiskey, where he writes, “…if 90% of the brain wasn’t used for anything, then damage to those parts of the brain that comprise that 90% wouldn’t affect a person at all.” Basically what he means is that if we only used 10% of our brain, if we got brain injuries, they would be less severe. Also, in this day and age, we have FMRI’s (Functional magnetic resonance imaging), which shows us that when doing different tasks; different parts of our brains are used. Even though we might not use all of it at once, and we might know little of it, we know for sure that we use and need all of our brain.
