Racism. For decades, this controversial topic has torn America apart. But, through recent events, it has blown up to great proportions. By now, most of you have heard about the drastic measures taken during the case involving the shooting of Tamir Rice. This incident was when an African American child was brutally murdered by the police for playing with a toy gun in the park. Not long after that, other stories of police officers roughly handling African Americans were soon unearthed. Since these tragic incidents, there has been a boom in protests all over America for equal rights based on skin color. These protesters are stating that the recent murders were acts of racism against African Americans. Now, people of all different races and religions have come together to fight for equality.
Many argue that these issues were coincidences, while others say that the cops killed the victims out of spite, and still some argue that the police did what they needed to do. However, it is hard to believe that all of these events were accidents, since in the past few months, numerous cases like this have been brought to our attention. A lot of occurrences show that African Americans become an immediate target of suspicion when a felony is committed. Many times, they were proven to be innocent, making the actions that officers had taken unjust and stereotypical.
Either way, whichever side you are on, you must always remember that we were all created equal. If a crime is committed, the accused should be trialled fairly, given a punishment that best suits their actions; no more, no less. Judgement passed upon them should not be based on skin color or race. A golden thread in court states that a convict is “innocent until proven guilty.” These rules should not just apply in the courtroom, but in everyday life as well. Suspicion is a part of human nature, but you cannot let it take control. People need to learn how to handle situations without violence or prejudice. It is because of these close-minded opinions that death can come by color!
