Love is a true gift that one person can give to another. Perhaps the most valued love comes from a bond between a mother and her child. A recent story captures this sort of momentous relationship, which happened in the Joice family from New York. Little baby Lily has just turned one year old. Unfortunately her mother won’t be there to celebrate her birthday. The story begins with Max Joice and his wife Liz Joice. Together the two were having a healthy baby and waiting with anticipation for it to finally arrive. Everything was going smoothly, and the couple had even recorded the amazing journey calling it “40 Weeks;” which is now available to view. But that is not what makes this story pull on your heartstrings.
Sadly, during her pregnancy Liz was suddenly diagnosed with cancer. The doctors told her that the outlook was not positive and that there was only one way they could treat the cancer. Of course, Liz would have taken this opportunity. However the treatment required an immediate “termination” of the baby. This meant that either Liz killed her unborn child and remained alive, or let the baby live, causing her own death.
As a truly selfless mother, Liz followed her heart. She refused to go through the treatment, thus keeping her baby alive. After spending her last few weeks, Liz gave birth to a baby girl; who she and her husband named Lily. She died a month after her labor. This heroic action shows a strong connection between a mother and her child. Liz died protecting her baby and giving her the gift of the world: life.
And although she is no longer with her family, Max Joice claims that his late spouse’s soul is still present. He feels Liz in his life everyday and sees her in Lily. Meanwhile, baby Lily is doing well and is growing up in lots of love. Hopefully, one day when she grows up she’ll turn out as wonderful as her mother was. As for the rest of us, Liz Joice can serve as a reminder of sacrifice towards the greater good. She gave up her life to save another, and even though she is gone, her story and spirit will live on.
