There are many people who cannot grasp the concept of drawing. And there are thousands that can. But how many people can draw, without picking up a pencil or a paintbrush? The answer is, not many. Although, slightly outdated news there is an amazing man that has made headlines by achieving the impossible. Paul Smith was born with a severe case of spastic cerebral palsy. As he got older, this disease progressed and inhibited him to not be able to move around or do things such as eating, dressing, and washing without any help. Yet inside this frail body hid a miracle.
Being under constant care in a senior home, Paul Smith had little to nothing that he could do. That is until he received a typewriter. Although he could not use all his fingers, Smith was able to find another use for this gift. Because of his love towards art, Smith figured out how to draw, yes draw with the typewriter. Using one finger, Smith would press on numbers and key signs as many times as it would take to form a line, a shape, and in the end a whole picture. According to Huffington Post he “taught himself how to use 10 symbol keys” on his typewriter and created “hundreds of portraits and landscapes.” This old man’s talents were soon recognized by the people around him.
Soon, Smith’s works decorated the halls of his senior home and news about this man spread like a wildfire. An interview, along with a documentary, were soon made and are both available to view on Youtube. This story had unintentionally made Paul Smith a celebrity. But Smith had not become famous just because of his incredible drawings, but because he was an inspiration. He overcame a difficult disability, proving that if you set your mind on your passion, it is completely possible to achieve. Paul Smith is a beacon of hope for those who are unable to do the same things. He is the symbol of true determination and diligence. And meanwhile, as the world marvels at his work he continues to go on creating more art, and giving it to the world.
