The year is 2045. Where you are living, there is extreme drought. You have to travel 20 miles just to get water. According to recent data collected by environmentalists, this might be the unfortunate reality. CNN columnist John D. Sutter states, “… one tiny little number -- 2 degrees. It may be the most important number you've never heard of.” He states that on average, if we raise the earth’s temperature by 2 degrees Celsius, we would cause catastrophe. Recent temperature data that has been taken shows that earth’s average temperature is rising at an almost exponential rate!
The good news: we can change the direction of this trend by drastically reducing carbon emissions. China is one of the leading contributors to Greenhouse emissions by cutting down vital forests. United Nations leaders will meet this December in Paris to talk about this issue. Katharine Hayhoe, an atmospheric scientist compares this conflict to smoking. The more we smoke, the more our health deteriorates. This is also true for greenhouse emissions.
Today, we can see problems that might have to do with this. One such is the glimmering state of California. When you think of this region, you usually think of sunny days, every day. However, this is a horrible thing for California. The state has been suffering minimal drought for many years, but recently, the changes have been dramatic. There are now restrictions for water in California, but it doesn't have to be this way.
A solution to this might be planting more trees. Photosynthesis might be the angel that saves earth from catastrophe we can’t turn around. Basically, plants use Carbon Dioxide as food, and Oxygen is the waste product. Data states that in a tree can absorb up to 48 pounds of Carbon Dioxide! On this Earth Day, remember everything earth provided us with. We are responsible to keep the earth right how it is, and even better for the next generation.
