To many people, Antoine Lavoisier was the father of modern Chemistry. At the time, he was also a physiologist. He went to the renowned Collège Mazarin in Paris, France. There he learned the basics of mathematics, botany, and astronomy. Lavoisier’s work was influenced by the French Enlightenment movement at the time, and was adaptable. He had a good reputation for being self-controlled and was elected the president of the French Academy of Science at the age of just 25.
His hypothesizing benefited geology and chemistry, experimenting with the impact of rust. Another well-known accomplishment was discovering the nature of respiration, and oxygen taken up by blood. During the Reign of Terror in France, he was found as an investor for a tax collection company which was unpopular at the time. As a result, he was executed by guillotine on May 8th 1794, 221 years ago, on this day! We should remember Antoine Lavoisier’s legacy, and his contributions to science, biology, chemistry, geology, and much more!
