Wattpad. While many of you may not know this website, it is frequently used in our school by many young writers. This innovative, unique site is a community of stories and other writing that anyone can contribute to. Started in 2006 by partners, Allen Lau and Ivan Yuen, Wattpad is becoming more popular, worldwide each and every day. By creating an account, you can write stories, poems, and other forms of literature to publish for any other user to view. Along with being able to share your stories, you can also read others’ stories, and follow your friends’ writing.
As the world, especially America, becomes more and more advanced in technology, much of it is used in our schools as tools and incentives for children to learn. Therefore, using technology, such as iPads and Google Chromebooks, is definitely not uncommon in our classes. In some language arts classes, they have “Wattpad Wednesday”. This is an activity where, every Wednesday, students use the free Wattpad app, available on the App Stores, on their cellular devices and iPads. For a certain amount of class time each week, they are able to write their own original stories and even create digital covers for them. Over time, as students write and complete parts to their stories, they can publish them for others to read.
For example, a student whose pen name is Anthony Roth is writing a story titled, “The Seven Sacrifices.” By publishing his writing on Wattpad, he was able to achieve 155 reads since creating his account on September 24th! Overall, this app has opened up new opportunities for our school’s students as writers, and is a fun way to practice your writing skills.
